REMEMBRANCES was choreographed by former Dance Kaleidoscope dancer Brian Honigbaum and inspired by his relationship with local Holocaust survivors Mike (deceased) and Agnes Vogel. The ballet, presented with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, is dedicated to the six million Jews and five million others who died in the Holocaust. The emotional and sometimes harrowing choreography depicts events from Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) to the Ghettos, the death train, and finally, the gas chambers through the eyes of a single Jewish family.
Inspiration for the Piece
This historic ballet was choreographed by former Dance Kaleidoscope dancer Brian Honigbaum and inspired by his relationship with local Holocaust survivors Mike (deceased) and Agnes Vogel. The ballet, presented with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, is dedicated to the six million Jews and five million others who died in the Holocaust.
“I asked Agnes, who was then secretary of Jordan Dance Academy, about the numbers on her arm. It then became my goal to tell the story of what she and her husband Mike and millions of others endured during the Holocaust,” said Honigbaum. “It is important to keep their story alive, especially in face of the hatred that still exists in the world today.”
About the Choreographer
Brian Honigbaum grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana and found dance at an early age. He began his training at the age of 8 at the Jordan College Academy of Dance, at Butler University where his early teachers included Karl and Colette Kaufman and Michelle Jarvis. At the age of 14, Brian was one of only 25 dancers invited to train at the prestigious HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida. While at HARID, Brian trained with some of the most well known teachers of the era including: Marjorie and Maria Tallchief, John Taras, Oleg Tupine, Igor Youskevitch, and others. Brian continued his training at both the Boston Ballet and San Francisco Ballet School where he was invited to train year round. After dancing professionally with Louisville Ballet, Dance Kaleidoscope and Corpus Christi Ballet, Brian retired from the stage and now resides in Corpus Christi, Texas with his wife and two daughters. Brian is currently the Ballet Master with Corpus Christi Ballet.

The concert will open with DK’s atheltic piece, iconoGlass. Choreographed in 1998 by DK artistic director David Hochoy, this piece is demanding for the dancers and thrilling for audiences.
Education Performances
There will be six school matinee performances of REMEMBRANCES on October 15, 20 and 21 at 10am and noon. These performances are meant to compliment teacher’s programs related to the Holocaust. Students will learn about the horror and tragedy of the Holocaust through the medium of dance; the cause and effect of hatred, prejudice and intolerance; and how to create dialogue promoting tolerance using the ballet as a vehicle for conversation.
