There are many opportunities to experience exceptional dance in 2022-23 at venues large and small.

  CarminaPOWERFUL. TIMELESS. EPIC.

Carmina Burana is timeless. The music was composed by Carl Orff in 1936 (almost 100 years ago) and DK’s dance interpretation was choreographed by David Hochoy in 1995, and it is still every bit as relevant, moving, captivating as the day it premiered. Its use of choral music, as well as the Martha Graham vocabulary root it in tradition; yet its evocative storytelling and production aspects make it a spectacle for any audience member.

The production is divided into two parts: Act I “The Day'' and Act II “The Night”-- depicting two facets of life, the light and dark.

The work opens with a mesmerizing abstraction of the mythical Wheel of Fortune, and then Act I continues to uplift us with depictions of a fantastical wedding, friendship, and birth. Act II will move you with its portrayals of war, witchcraft, and an homage to victims of the AIDS epidemic. The piece concludes with a jubilant dance of Angels, and culminates with the return of the Wheel of Fortune, symbolizing that through good times and bad, the Wheel of Fortune will always keep spinning.

Scheherazade

David Hochoy’s "Scheherazade" is inspired by “A Thousand and One Nights” and it embodies the magic of
storytelling and the imagination as stories shift from the abstract to narrative as told through dance, visually stunning costumes and lighting. The full cast of dancers portray Scheherazade, a princess, a prince on horseback,
a witch and her minions.

This work premiered in Indianapolis in 1995 and it’s fitting that this is the last work of the 2022-23 Legacy Season.
The rigorous and pulsing grande finale showcases the stamina and pinpoint coordination of DK dancers
always at their peak.
