Joshua Blake Carter joins Dance Kaleidoscope after a 14-year career with Giordano Dance Chicago (GDC). He first joined GDC as a dancer, then served as Director of Giordano II and Operations Manager, all while working as a freelance choreographer and educator under his own company, JBC Creative, Inc. 

Originally from Atlanta, GA, Joshua began dancing at the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts at age 14, and spent the next four years training intensively. It was during this time that he first began exploring his voice as a choreographer. 

CHRISTEL DEHAAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

In June of 2020, Indianapolis lost a thoughtful and dedicated community leader and arts supporter, Christel DeHaan. Before her passing, Christel expressed her desire to award Legacy Gifts as the culminating act of her philanthropic organization, the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation. Dance Kaleidoscope is honored to be a Christel DeHaan Legacy Gift Recipient. In memory of Christel’s generosity and legacy, Dance Kaleidoscope has gratefully retitled our Artistic Director as the Christel DeHaan Artistic Director in perpetuity.

Kim Gutfreund

Kim Gutfreund joined Dance Kaleidoscope as Executive Director in June 2021.  Kim has more than twenty-five years of nonprofit leadership experience, serving as executive director of Jackson School of the Arts in Michigan and as the founding executive director of Peter Sparling Dance Co. in Ann Arbor.  As executive director of the school of the arts for 16 years, Kim was a driving force behind the tremendous growth of the organization and the community’s arts and cultural sector.  She positioned the organization as a leading provider of accessible arts education and developed a public-private partnership with the City of Jackson to relocate the organization downtown to support organizational growth and the city’s economic development. At the school of the arts, she managed a capital campaign to transform the historic Masonic Temple into a center for the arts, and when she arrived at Dance Kaleidoscope, with the Board and David Hochoy, completed the $2 million capital campaign to create an artistic home for the company.  

Ms. Gutfreund has been active in volunteer activities and has served on numerous boards.  Currently she serves on the Executive Board of the Indianapolis Consortium of Arts Administrators and is a member of the Indy Arts Council Equity Task Force.  In Michigan she served as the Chair of the Jackson Public Arts Commission and on the boards of the Arts and Cultural Alliance, Business and Professional Women, the Jackson Symphony Guild and was a frequent panelist for the Michigan Arts and Culture Council. 

After graduating from Valdosta State University with a BA in English, she worked in advertising and public relations, at the Americans for the Arts and then at the American Express Foundation in the international philanthropic department. 

Stuart Lewis

Associate Artistic Director & Director of Community Engagement

Stuart Lewis began dancing in Lynchburg, Virginia as a student of Keith Lee and then at Virginia School of the Arts at the instruction of Adam Sage, Dominique Angel, Lisa Thomas, Tyrone Brooks, Martha Faesi, and Sonny Robinson. He graduated cum laude from Butler University with a BA in Dance, concentrating in pedagogy. While at Butler, Stuart was fortunate to study with teachers such as Susan McGuire, Marek Cholewa, Derek Reid, Patrick Hinson, and Cynthia Pratt. Stuart spent nine years as a dancer with Dance Kaleidoscope under the direction of David Hochoy where he danced featured roles such as the Revivalist in Martha Graham’s Appalachian Spring and soloist roles in David Hochoy’s Carmina Burana, An American in Paris, and Magical Mystery Tour. Stuart has attended programs with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Ballet West. He has performed repertory by dance pantheons such as Paul Taylor, Talley Beatty, Nacho Duato, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, and Stephanie Martinez.

Stuart’s choreographic work has been featured in concerts produced by Dance Kaleidoscope, Phoenix Rising Dance Company, Ballet Theatre of Indiana, Central Indiana Dance Ensemble, and Butler Ballet. He was the choreographer for the short film Dreaming of You(th), which premiered at the Indy Shorts International Film Festival in July 2023. His work has also been featured at numerous dance festivals including Regional Dance America Midstates and Ballet Alliance. In addition to concert dance, Stuart has choreographed multiple theatre productions, including the Indiana premiere of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Stuart has been teaching ballet and modern disciplines across the country for over a decade. He has been on faculty at summer intensive programs for Water Street Dance Milwaukee, Mutual Dance Theatre, Dance Kaleidoscope, and Virginia School of the Arts. In 2016 he staged a full-length The Nutcracker at Dancers Studio Inc in Columbus, Indiana.

As Director of Community Engagement, Stuart strives to continue integrating Dance Kaleidoscope’s artistic excellence in contemporary dance throughout the Indianapolis community. In his first year in this role, he facilitated new partnerships with organizations such as Access Pass as part of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Eskenazi Health, Harrison Center for the Arts, and Anderson University. He is looking forward to continuing to make Dance Kaleidoscope programming more accessible to the Indianapolis community.

Liberty Harris

Liberty Harris founded the Dance Kaleidoscope School in 2014 and under her leadership, the school has grown exponentially in enrollment and performance opportunities.  She oversees a team of eight staff members and ensures the artistic excellence of the four Dance Kaleidoscope Ensembles.    

As Rehearsal Director, Libby coaches the company dancers in preparation for upcoming performances as well as maintains the existing repertory of Dance Kaleidoscope. Libby teaches weekly company classes in ballet and Martha Graham techniques, calling on her fifteen years of experience as a DK dancer. This is Libby’s 25th Season with Dance Kaleidoscope.

Laura E. Glover

Lighting Designer & Production Manager

Laura E. Glover, Lighting Designer/Production Manager, in her 33rd season with DK, owns international acclaim for her lighting with Dance Kaleidoscope, Ballets de San Juan, Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre, and Taylor 2. Ms. Glover is also a company member of the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company, as well as having lit productions for Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Summit Performance Indianapolis, American Lives Theatre, the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Butler Ballet, and the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus. 

Her dance lighting includes over 100 world premieres and the reconstruction of the lighting of Jean Rosenthal, Thomas Skelton, Jennifer Tipton, and David Finley. Ms. Glover was awarded a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Indy Arts Council in 2001 and 2019 and holds an M.F.A. in Lighting Design from SUNY Purchase, where she studied with Brian MacDevitt and William Mintzer.

Katie Angel

Operations Manager

Over 25 years ago, a young teenager volunteered backstage to change gels and costumes for a dance company. Little did she know how working a Dance Kaleidoscope show would change the course of her life. A Butler graduate, Katie Angel stage managed for DK for twelve years, taking some time off for maternity leave for her son, Jason. Katie is an accomplished producer, stage manager, director, and performer. Occasionally she will take on other challenges, including lighting design, sound design, teaching technical theatre, and fight choreography. 

Favorite productions include directing/fight choreography for She Kills Monsters, performing at GenCon and Emerald City Comic-Con, production stage managing the ISO’s Yuletide, and lighting designer for Cirque Indy’s Flight of the Living Dead. Katie also performed as the Friendly Witch of Pumpkin Town for the Indianapolis Zoo’s ZooBoo! She is thrilled to be back with Dance Kaleidoscope as their Operations Manager. 

Jay Hemphill

Marketing and Development Manager

After years of watching from the audience, Jay Hemphill joined the Dance Kaleidoscope family in April 2023. Before coming to DK, he was the artistic director at Arts for Lawrence. He was pivotal in creating visual and performing arts programming for Theater at the Fort and the Fort Ben Cultural Campus. An Indianapolis-based actor, writer, and theatre educator, Jay has performed and taught throughout the Midwest and Southeast for over three decades. 

In May 2020, Jay received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre and Drama from Indiana University. Jay also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. Away from Dance Kaleidoscope, he lives in the historic Herron-Morton neighborhood with his partner of 17 years and their miniature schnauzers, George and Otto.

Terri D. Moore

Costume & wardrobe manager

Terri D. Moore joined Dance Kaleidoscope this season as the Costume and Wardrobe Manager. Terri has been a stitcher, makeup artist, and wig stylist for over 35 years. Terri was the Hair/Wig Supervisor for the national tour of Monty’s Python’s Spamalot. She has also built costumes for North Carolina Repertory Theatre, Wagon Wheel Theatre, and Butler University Ballet. Terri was the costume designer for Footlite Musicals’ 2014 production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and ACT’s 2022 production of Working: The Musical

Terri has been a proud member of IATSE Local 893 since 2009 and has had the privilege of working on many Broadway Shows at Clowes Memorial Hall and the Murat Theatre. 

David Hochoy

Artistic Director Emeritus

After 32 seasons with Dance Kaleidoscope, retired Artistic Director Emeritus David Hochoy is truly an international ambassador. David Hochoy was born in Trinidad, West Indies. After receiving a B. Sc. at McGill University in Montreal, where he began studying for a career as a doctor, he continued his graduate work in theatre earning an M.A. in Directing from Penn State. It was there, at age 20, David took his first dance class and discovered his true love of dance.
